Question and Answer for 28 October 2011

By Jamie Douglas

A writer’s fingers never rest. Last week I was hoping to write ahead for a few days, but still never managed to get quite caught up. So I opened up the folder with reader’s inquiries and was amazed at some stuff that recently found its way there. So here we go, with our first comment in response this Q&A at Escape From America Magazine, rather than a question, coming from Joseph S. in Arkansas in the United States of America:

No, expatriots should not be allowed to return to this country upon a worldwide, economic collapse.  Thinking only of themselves, they abandoned
any personal responsibility to try to prevent such a problem here. Or, if it should happen here, they exhibited no effort to protect themselves and their families in this country. Let them stay where they are and eat cake.

Thank you so much for your enlightened input. Please rest assured that we have been and will be eating cake and croissants for breakfast every day, while we watch the USS America sink into ever-deeper problems by the day. You may not be aware of this, but many “Expatriots” are working abroad for those US corporations that don’t pay any federal taxes, and a great majority of them are planning to return to the US, to rejoin the families and personal responsibilities they “abandoned.”

What if you've expatriated, but your money is in S.S. and pensions coming from the US? Will you have a problem getting your income?

No problem at all. If you contact the Social Security Administration, they can give you a list of countries where you can have you money direct deposited to an account in your new home country. The same goes for your pension. As an alternative, have it all deposited in your US account and use a debit card to access your funds at ATM’s, paying for your purchases that way, where you can.

I have the green card & have been living in the States for 8 years. I am thinking about applying for citizenship but I am not sure if this would be beneficial in an economic meltdown? We also do have an Arabic name but we are not Muslims.

I don’t see any complications with your completing the US citizenship process. Meltdown or not, living in the USA as a non citizen has some serious drawbacks. ICE can deport you for DUI’s or even bad checks. Also should you dream of many Americans’ highest aspirations, that is to buy an assault rifle, or have a liquor still, you need to be a US Citizen, but not crazy. No matter what, you can always return to the place of your origin if the situation in the US becomes too bad.

How to obtain a second passport/citizenship with a name change? I feel this is THE way to go now that the entire planet seems to be in a constant state of flux.
Thank you in advance for your answer.
Gayle

With the entire planet being in a constant state of flux, what kind of passport are you shooting for? And why the name change? Of course the best way to do what you want is to pick a country where you want to become a citizen, and then get married to one of its citizens. In most instance that will take care of both your requirements. Good luck to you and your future victim.

I wanted to answer a couple of the notes we received with facetiousness, as my faithful readers have come to know that I am somewhat of a satirist. I hope I did not disappoint anyone.
