Happy post digestive to all of you! To those of you who read my article on Friday December 23 about The Grinch, this is a follow up, thanks to an observant reader:
Hi Jamie,
I love your article 'Holiday Greetings from the Grinch'. Thank you!
The only exception being the phrase, “in looking back over the last 235 plus years, they never did declare war on Christmas."
It's a minor point, but ... You might be interested in this article:
I hope you have a lovely holiday! And please keep up the great work!
This certainly educated me about this all-important subject. So until next year, let there be a truce in this deadly conflict. Peace on Earth, please!
So this will be presidential election year in the U.S., plus elections of one third of the Senate and as is normal every two years, and all of the House seats are up for reelection as well.
In the last cycle, dumb and dumber prevailed of course. The American electorate, having been thoroughly bamboozled by massively misleading last minute advertisements on both sides, decided to once again change the makeup of their corrupt, inept, and disingenuous “leaders” of the people. And once again they got what they apparently wanted: A hopelessly deadlocked partisan shambles! There is no doubt in my mind that if the nation’s founding fathers had foreseen what the future would bring to their idea of democracy, they would have made George Washington the first monarch of the Kingdom of the United States.
With the sitting Supreme Court having declared corporations to be people as well as allowing the State of Connecticut the power of eminent domain to seize private property for a private development; the recent passage of the as-usual inappropriately named National Defense Authorization Act (remember the “Patriot Act?”), with amendments to said act that pervert the 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendments to the Constitution of the United States and permitting increased militarization of the U.S. police forces; the arrest and detention of U.S. citizens without the required due process of law so that they can be detained at will, subject to renewal of said authorization only once every year...
Add to that list the denial of habeas corpus or legal counsel, and you have the scary ingredients for a totalitarian state, with the power to spy on its citizens in any way they desire. Code word: Terrorism! There is no doubt in my mind that whoever planned the attacks on September 11, 2001 won. If, as George W. Bush so wisely stated, “They hate us for our freedom,” then “they” absolutely won. Unfortunately, the militant Islamists at whose doorsteps these crimes against the nation are being laid hate us for a completely different reason: Arrogant imperialist foreign policies. Since the founding of the republic, it has been at war with someone or other in all but a few years of its existence. Not exactly a peaceful nation, but it is the victor who writes the history books.
And so it goes in the Congress. The opposing two parties have been at war with each other for years, unable to save our crumbling economy, but quickly collaborating to come together when it comes to rapid, middle of the night passage of constitution destroying legislation.
While it is my wish to see all the damaging elements removed from the political process, I am afraid that humanity is just not built that way. Freshmen in both the House and Senate quickly learn that it is useless to swim against the stream, if you want to be assigned to any committees where your voice is heard. And to make your voice heard, you have to make compromises with the forces of darkness that rule the nation: established senior politicians and their lobbyist puppeteers.
